Success through regional solidarity
A suitable new building with integrated conference facilities is under construction for the State of Schleswig-Holstein on the southern end of the Kiel Fjord. The structure comprises two five-storey building parts connected by a continuous basement. The design stages the visitor’s path as beginning at the main entrance on the street, continuing via the inner courtyard and foyer, to end at the water on the ‘Hörn’. Conference and catering facilities will be located here in future.

While clinker brick in the typical red tone of the region is used for the outer façade, a bright brick is deployed for the inner courtyard. The façade is divided by deep-set window pilaster strips all around the building, resulting in a varied play between light and shadow. The aim is to attain gold-status certification for the building according to the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council). Thus, the newly constructed building will be the first in Kiel to use water from the fjord for heating and cooling purposes via a heat pump.
