A hospital as hybrid
Almost 600,000 people live in the catchment area of Vivantes Klinikum Neukölln, the largest municipal hospital in Berlin. To gain more space and a modern hospital infrastructure a new extension to the main building is being built. The largest emergency department in Berlin will form the base for the new hospital at the ground level. On the remaining four levels there is a new OR-area, cardiology and endoscopy, as well as intensive care and normal care wards. There will be a helipad on the roof.

The hybrid function of the building with the different uses in the individual levels can be seen in the external design of the building: The different functional levels, which are divided by horizontal bands, rest on the base of the emergency department. The metal facade in between the bands is filled in a varying rhythm with open, semitransparent and closed elements that take into account the needs of the user for views and light, but also privacy and protection.
